In 1946, the Galerie Maeght, an avant-garde Parisian gallery on rue du Bac Gauche, organized an exhibition called Black is a colour. This statement was meant to shock, being the very opposite of the theories being thought at art schools at that time. Black was considered to be the absolute lack of colour and the opposite of white. However, in reality it's not the lack of colour - it's the lack of light. All black objects and items are seen this way because they absorb most of the wavelengths that reach them. According to Kassia St. Clair in The Secret Lives of Colour, "[...] it's the colour of fashion and mourning at the same time, a symbol of fertility and erudition, but also devotion". On the other hand, following Eva Heller, the author of the famous book The psychology of Color, black is associated with youth and neutrality. For us, black generates a sense of elegance and power.
